Possible history: The "Jeff Davis Quilt" was begun by Mrs. R. V. Hurt, wife of John Hurt of Mooresville, Alabama, in 1863 as a gift for President Jefferson Davis. The quilt was not finished when the war ended, so it was not presented. In 1872, Mr. Hurt moved to Texas, and in 1884 Mrs. Hurt died without having presented the quilt. Mr. Hurt remarried in 1886 to Julia Banks of Clinton, Mississippi, whose father was a personal friend of Davis. Consequently she preserved the quilt as a precious relic, and only gave it up in a public cause.
