Provenance This rifle was used by Union forces and captured at the Battle at Sailor's Creek (Sayler's Creek). This weapon is a forerunner of the Henry and Winchester rifles. Oscar Winchester bought out Volcanic Arms Company in 1866 and continued production of this same type of firearm in his name.

The donor, Robert S. Smither, served in the 55th Virginia Infantry as an ambulance driver until the end of the war. He would presumably have been present at Sailor's Creek.
