Owner Regiment 1st Company Richmond Howitzers
Provenance A postwar newspaper article described this coat as one that Captain Edmund Gaines brought from Texas at the close of the war. "The braid and Confederate buttons were removed by order of the authorities." According to the same source, Gaines joined the 1st Company of the Richmond Howitzers, but proved "too corpulent for active service," and instead became a quartermaster officer for Gen. John Bankhead Magruder. Gaines accompanied Magruder to Texas and served the entire war on his staff.
