Provenance This uniform belonged to Edward Courtney Jenkins, who served in a Maryland company organized as Co. B, 21st Virginia Infantry, "Maryland Guard." This is one of the uniforms made by the Richmond firm of Kent, Paine and Company for Maryland companies in Richmond in May 1861. He wore this uniform while lost in the mountains for three days and nights; he was found unconscious and never recovered full health enough to permit him to return to the ranks. The mud of Cheat Mountain is said to still cling to the coat from this ordeal.
