Description The sofa is made of mahogany and has an upholstered medallion back, carved details, fluted rails, scroll carved transition on back, carved knees, and cabriole legs and front. The feet rest on casters. The knees are carved into leaf shapes.

Provenance The medallion back sofa was used by Jefferson Davis and family while in residence in the Executive Mansion in Richmond, Virginia, 1861-1865. The sofa was originally purchased before the war by the donor's father from Mr. (John) Belvin; the donor's father re-purchased the sofa at the 1870 Auction. The donor's mother was Mrs. M. L. Smith, treasurer of the Confederate Memorial Literary Society.
