A Confederate soldier left this Burnside carbine with Miss Lucy Thompson of Abbeville, South Carolina during the last days of the Confederacy.
"I was standing on the porch of the old Archer House on Main St. in Abbeville when the soldiers passed through at the time of President Davis' last visit here. One of the men stepped up to the gate and handed me this gun and his knapsack and cartridges, saying 'Take Them. I cannot carry them any farther.' "
