Description Model 1850 U.S. Foot Officer's Sword: slightly curved, single-edged blade with two fullers, back of blade engraved "Manufe de Klingenthal [Coulaux & Cie]"; gilded brass hilt with guard decorated with pierced design of floral sprays and rosettes, knuckle bow pierced for sword knot near pommel which is decorated on forward edge with leaves; polished wood grip with twisted wire wrap. Leather scabbard (.88a) with brass mounts.

Provenance A North Carolina captain captured this sword and scabbard during the war at an unnamed battle.

Possible history: "This sword belonged to a Captain who died in the hospital at Yorktown Va. early in 1861 from wounds received in an ambush attack made by Yankees on Dreux's Command." [see file for documentation]
