Provenance "A graduate of West Point and decorated Mexican War veteran, A.P. Hill was a professional soldier. In Confederate service, he rose from colonel of the 13th Virginia Infantry to lieutenant general in command of the Army of Northern Virginia's Third Corps. Known for his tempestuous personality and his red battle shirt, Hill was killed in battle on April 2, 1865, a week before the army's surrender."
