Provenance "The Indian Chief - a three masted schooner used as a training and receiving ship by the Confederate Navy. Sunk by the Confederates when Sherman occupied Charleston. Location - Town Creek Channel about 300 feet south of the Cooper River Bridge. Removed by the U.S. Engineer Dept. in July 1929. Major N.Y. Du Hamel, District Engineer. This brass spike was taken out of the limbers. Authority - Henry F. Rivers, Assistant Engineer, U.S. Engineer Office, Charleston, S.C."
