Catalog Number 0985.13.00180a-b
Description These circular, gold, thumb buttons were made for cuffs. The buttons were made from Egyptian guineas. The serated edges remain on the cuff buttons. The inscription is said to be the monogram of the Sultan; possibly Arabic writing.
Owned Hunter Holmes McGuire; Raleigh Edward Colston
Provenance These buttons were worn by Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire who was a member of Lieutenant-General Thomas Jackson's staff during the Civil War. Brigadier-General Raleigh Edward Colston gave the cuff links to McGuire, saying: "I would beg of you to accept, simply as a remembrance of me the little parcel I send you… It is only a couple of Egyptian guineas which, before leaving Egypt, I had mounted as sleeve buttons, but I soon found that they were too heavy and inconvenient for usual wear…. The Egyptian pound or guinea is worth $4.943..." (per letter dated March 30)
