Description The surgical kit comes in a walnut case (.966) with the remnants of a paper label glued to the top of the case. The interior of the case is lined with blue velvet and has a divider. The lid contains a tenon saw (a), bullet forceps (b) and artery forceps (c). The base contains two large amputating knives (d, e), a large catlin (f), a metacarpal saw (g), a small amputating knife (h), a small catlin (i), two scalpels (j, l), a tenaculum (k), a curved suture needle (m), two rolls of brown bandages (n, o), a head saw (p), two raspatory saw bits (q, r), raspatory handle (s), elevator (for lifting skull disc) (u), and a brush with short bristles (t).

Provenance Dr. George Henry Caperton of Monroe County, [West] Virginia used this surgical kit during the war at White Sulphur Springs Confederate Hospital. Caperton enlisted in the 31st Virginia Infantry and transferred to Gen. John Echols' staff. When Caperton became unfit for field service, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon to Dr. Woodville.
