Varina Howell Davis may have made this youth size captain's shell jacket and pants for Joseph Evan Davis during his childhood at the White House of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia. It is known to have been worn by him during the Civil War. Joseph was the third son of Jefferson and Varina Davis. He was tragically killed in a fall from the porch of the Executive Mansion, in Richmond, Virginia in 1864.
