Description Presentation sword; straight, double-edged blade, etched on reverse side of blade just above ricasso: "Thomas [,] Griswold & Co", blade etched with floral sprays, vines, stand of arms, reverse ricasso: "Hyde & Goodrich"; gilded brass cruciform hilt with a lion's head pommel and quillons; flat link chain forms knuckle bow. Brass scabbard (.3a), with three-ring mounts and frog stud; engraved on upper portion of the scabbard: "Presented to 1st Lt. W. Norbonne Starke by the men of Company E [1st] La Infantry, Warrenton Navy Yard Sept. 1861."

Provenance The presentation sword belonged to Maj. William Norbonne Starke, who was on Gen. A. P. Hill's staff. The men of Co. E, 1st (Strawbridge's) Louisiana Infantry, at the Warrenton Navy Yard presented the sword to him in September 1861 while he was a 1st lieutenant.
