Hardtack issued to Joseph G. Penn and Thomas G. Penn of the 10th Virginia Cavalry when leaving the prison of Point Lookout, Maryland. They were captured April 3, 1865 near Five Forks, Dinwiddie County, Virginia by Sheridan's Cavalry. They were released on June 16, 1865, which was likely the date they were given this hardtack.
After he left the 42nd Virginia Infantry in 1862, Joseph Penn was conscripted in October 1864 and joined the 10th Virginia Cavalry. After Thomas Penn joined the 42nd Virginia Infantry, he hired a substitute and was discharged in July 1862, and was subsequently conscripted in October 1864 and joined the 10th Virginia Cavalry.
