|Description||The sword bayonet has a combination of wood and metal on its grip. The blade has the following marks: "Waffenfabrik Steyr 1881" engraved on its back and serial number "57898" engraved on its quillon. With scabbard (.270a), marked a serial number of "5227."|
Unknown. The sword and scabbard were made postwar (1881) in Germany.
According to ordnance consultant Andre Jandot, this is a French Gras bayonet made at either Saint Etienne or at Chatebrault after 1874 and until 1886. It is called a Model 1874. The identification is based on markings on the back of the blade. Eventually, this bayonet was sold to the Austrian arms factory of Steyr, the original markings ground off and remarked with the current markings.
