Description This is a lid from an inkstand with scalloped steel and beaded glass. It is stamped "Improved per's Patent...." along the outer edge of a steel lid. It also caries the date of manufacture and/or patent: January 7, 1851.

Provenance Inkwell (inkstand) lid. It was removed from the Richmond office of Jefferson Davis by two young Federal officers the day that Davis evacuated the city. It is reported to have been taken from Davis's private office by ancestors of the donor. (additional history in file)
