The shovel handle has a silver over copper plate with the following inscription, "Pick and shovel used in breaking ground, Jefferson Davis Monument November 7, 1905." Provenance The pick (.126) and shovel were used to break ground for the Jefferson Davis Monument in Richmond, Virginia at what is now the intersection of Monument Avenue and Davis Street on November 7, 1905.
