Object Name Coat, Frock

Description Uniform frock coat: double breasted, 9 buttons in each row, steel gray wool cloth, light brown wool and silk lining in the body, ribbed black silk in skirt, white cotton sheeting (with brown pinstripes) lining in sleeves; all insignia and buttons removed. Although the rank braid is now missing, careful examination reveals the shadow of both midshipman and lieutenant's rank on the cuff, as well as shoulder straps.

Provenance This frock coat was worn by George Terry Sinclair on the steamship Florida [CSS Florida] all during the Civil War. Sinclair was with the commerce raider Florida from late 1862 until her capture in October 1864 and was imprisoned at Fort Warren, Boston, until early 1865. According to the donor, the buttons were "robbed by fair ladies from time to time."
