Description This is an expanding leather accordion style envelope. The initials "J.D." are embossed in a gothic script in gold on either side of the leather closing strap. The strap is broken above the latch and the missing piece is inside the case. The contents include a piece of a Confederate flag in a mourning envelope (a), a travel inkwell (b), a book of writing paper, envelopes (both plain and embossed with a rose), an autograph of Varina Jefferson Davis, and an 1872 Union Planters Bank check signed by Jefferson Davis. [According to loan certificate, also contains authograph letter from Mrs. R. E. Lee]
