Description Chain with a small cross pendant having shell tips on all four arms and center. The chain's small circular links are broken is some places and repaired with white thread in other places. Part of a set of jewelry consisting of four different pieces, each made of gutta-percha. The set is presented in a glass domed case; the dome is broken into three pieces but still fits together on the presentation base. All pieces of jewelry are sewn onto a red faded upholstery type fabric. The old Museum label "323" is on top of the dome.

Made unidentified Confederate POW ; Benjamin Maxwell Burroughs
Provenance Confederate POWs made the set of jewelry at Johnson's Island in 1864. Capt. B. Maxwell Burroughs made one of the gutta percha chains. The four pieces were given to Col. George Troup Maxwell, who was also a POW at Johnson's Island.
