Description Model 1840 U. S. Non-commissioned Officer's Sword: straight, single-edged blade with single fuller; leather cushion; brass hilt with integral grip, rounded guard and counter-guard; obverse ricasso stamped "U.S./ JH / 1862 " reverse ricasso stamped "Made by / Ames Mfg Co./ Chicopee / Mass"; flat knuckle bow curving into ball pommel. Leather scabbard (.166a) with brass mounts, drag missing, throat badly dented, possibly hit by bullet; scabbard broken.

Provenance The sword and scabbard was taken by J. B. Moore from a dead Federal infantry sergeant on the battlefield at Second Manassas. The dents on the scabbard and under the hilt show the ball's route of passage before entering the soldier's body.
