Description The balloon back chair is made of mahogany and ash. The chair is carved with symmetrical acanthus leaves, and it has a cabriole front and legs. The chair is upholstered, but present fabric is not original. The crest of the chair carving is cleanly sawn off, as well as the leaves are flattened, as if sawn.

Provenance This side chair formed part of a set used by Jefferson Davis while in residence at the White House of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia. Originally part of a parlor set loaned by Mrs. Schaap, that consisted of a sofa, an armchair, and side chairs (0985.13.222, .224-226) and a non-matching pier table loaned by Mrs. Marcuse (0985.14.52) that have subsequently become the property of the Museum by donation from her heirs.
