Catalog Number 1974.008.00010
Description Adult chemise of a plain weave, white cotton, stiff from apparent sizing. The neckline is round and scooped, front and back. The front is constructed in four sections. The upper section is made of scalloped lace; the scallops are 0.625" X 1" and run full length of the neckline. The front neckline, lower edge is machine sewn into a strip of cotton fabric a quarter-inch wide. The second section is a lace insertion, same motif as upper, is one-inch wide and runs the length of the neckline. The lower edge is machine sewn into a quarter-inch wide strip of fabric. The third section consists of seven insertions of lace, (the same lace as upper section) about 1" X 2.125" each, alternating with six sections of tucks. Each tuck section has five eighth-inch tucks, machine stitched, and is about 2.125" X 1.125." The lower edge is machine stitched into a quarter-inch wide strip of matching cotton fabric, which runs from mid-armscye to mid-armscye. The back neckline is constructed in two sections. The upper section is the same as the front. The lower section is the same as the second section front. It has a quarter-inch seam at the center back, machine stitched, with edges turned under and hand-stitched. The lace on the neckline is cotton with abstracted floral motif - five-eighths inch in diameter, diamond-shaped blossoms, repeating horizontally, edged top and bottom with alternating half-inch in diameter, round and diamond-shaped blossoms. The chemise sleeveless so the armholes are edged all around with the same lace as upper and lower neckline. They are machine stitched into a quarter-inch wide strip of matching cotton fabric. The main body front and back are loosely gathered at top center just under the neckline. It widens as it goes down to the hemline. The main body has no waistline. The bottom width is 38 inches. The side seams are one-eighth inch flat-felled, with the fell on the inside. The side gussets are triangular-shaped, set-in at the hem and extend up twelve inches. The bottom width is 2.5 inches and narrows to a quarter inch at the top. The gusset is sewn into side seam on one side with a flat, fell seam. The other side of right gusset has a three-eighths inch seam, machine stitched. This is a lapped seam variation: right sides of fabric pieces brought together, one selvage edge folded over the other, then one row of stitches through the resulting three layers of fabric. This results in a seam with one row of stitches seen on the inside and no stitches seen on the outside. The hem is 1.5 inches wide, edge turned under a quarter-inch and machine stitched. On the main body, front, top right "no t" is written in pencil. On the main body, back, inside, top center, "" above "870/40" is written in pencil.
