|Description||Red felt wool with a black thread tassel. Small white ribbon at the base of the tassel, where it attaches to the fez. Interior paper label is attached with adhesive and inscribed with writing, believed Ottoman (Turkish) or possibly Arabic.|
|Dimensions||H-5.5 Dia-7 inches|
|Owned||Varina Anne Davis (Winnie)|
The Turkish fez was given to Winnie Davis as a present.
"Fez given Miss Winnie Davis by a Turk - Presented by Mrs. Jefferson Davis."
The label is inscribed in a language that originally was believed to be Arabic, but may be Ottoman (Turkish). The first word has meaning in both Ottoman and Arabic. Some of the letters are unusual, and may indicate a non-Arabic language (perhaps African, such as Swahili or Yoruba) that was written in Arabic. The inscription indicates both quality and possibly the style; something to the effect of, "Fez admired by the Sultan."
