Description The mantel is made of white smoked marble with an iron "arch" at the fireplace opening. The mantelpiece has curved, beveled edges, and beveled triangular inserts are on each side with raised beveled top center piece. The iron arch has patterns of squares with inner circles on the edge and a pattern of three vertical lines at approximately three-inch intervals on the outer edge.

Owned Valentine family (tentative)
Provenance The white smoked marble mantel is of mid-nineteenth century design and was installed in the Nursery (North Carolina Room) in 1895. It has no association to the White House of the Confederacy during the time of the Davis residency of 1861-1865. It is believed to have been owned/used by the Valentine family, as they were the donors.
