Object Name Plate, Dinner

Description Dinner plate; part of a 35-piece earthenware dinner service in the "Ailanthus" pattern impressed with a stamp of the manufacturer (Holland, Green and late Harvey). The service is decorated with transfer scenes of Turkish views executed in brown, purple, green and yellow. All of the pieces are 10-sided in shape. One piece has the design registration for the 10th August, 1853.

Provenance Traditionally, these belonged to Jefferson Davis and were once used in the White House of the Confederacy. Part of the set ordered for the Confederate White House of Richmond, but which never served that purpose. When the china arrived, it was put in bond awaiting the result of the war. The china was bought and given to Judge John Curtis Underwood.
