Provenance Brig. Gen. William Ruffin Cox wore these field glasses "in a brief but violent engagement in the retreat from Petersburg, Virginia, just a few days before the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse." The field glasses were punctured by a bullet in the left lens, which "probably saved the General's life."
