Event Battle of First Manassas / First Bull Run
Provenance A. P. Hubbard carried this toothbrush during the war. He served with the 4th South Carolina Infantry, Co. B, "Palmetto Riflemen". At the first Battle of Manassas, a one-ounce ball pierced Hubbard's left arm above the elbow, and entered his left side, passing through his testament (Library Collection), cutting his watch chain (0985.10.203) and breaking this tooth brush. This is the first case on record of a testament which saved a soldier's life.
