Provenance Betty Du Val (later Mrs. Patterson) of Florida made the rye straw hat during the war when she was 16 years old. The rye straw was split and braided, then shaped by some fashion plate supposed to have come through the blockade. The hat was trimmed with velvet from an antebellum dress. (accession ledger)
