Description Woman's hat, similar to porkpie style, made of 0.25-inch wide palmetto woven in a flat basket weave on the top of the crown and in looping points on the side, with no brim. Trimmed on top and bottom with plaited palmetto. Lined with white cotton and padded with white spun cotton. A 7-inch section of finely separated palmetto in large loops is attached to the front top.

Provenance Miss Patty Grenaway made the hat (a palmetto bonnet) in 1863 from palmetto brought to her from Charleston, South Carolina by Capt. Edward Snead of North Carolina. She is believed to have lived in North Carolina. Miss Grenaway later married and became Mrs. T. M. Trent.
