Description The piece of jewelry is a brass pin with butternut blossom and two leaves. The blossom is made of ivory. The pin is mounted to a rectangular copper plate with one hole at each corner and "O. D. HOGUE" stamped above the pin. Inscription: crown, "18," and a lion stamped on the inside

Event Battle of Champion's Hill
Provenance A mortally wounded Confederate artillery captain gave this pin, in the shape of a butternut blossom, to James Gilmore Hogue at the Battle of Champion's Hill, Mississippi (May 16, 1863). Hogue was assisting in carrying him "to a place of safety and comfort" from the battlefield. Hogue had the copper plate attached to the pin after the war. He was member of Co. F, 32nd Ohio Infantry.
