Provenance Captain John Quincy Winfield wore this pair of epaulets. He served under Brig. Gen. Turner Ashby in Co. B (2nd), 7th Virginia Cavalry, "Letcher's Brook Gap Guards." Winfield organized this company in 1860 in Rockingham County. He resigned his commission due to a hereditary illness, scrofula, in June 1862. Winfield died on July 29, 1892 in Broadway, Virginia.
