Description Uniform frock coat: double breasted, 7 buttons in each row, gray wool and cotton cloth with blue wool twill facings and piping, dark green wool and silk lining in the body, light brown cotton sheeting lining in sleeves; gold braid first lieutenant's collar insignia, gold sleeve braid , Federal Eagle "I" buttons without backmarks.

Provenance Dating from early in the war (1861 or 1862), the coat reflects the brief service of its owner, Captain Lawson H. Dance, from July 1, 1861 through April 27, 1862, when he was dropped from the rolls. He was nearly 50 years old when he enlisted.
