Description Epaulet box: Black enameled tin, with a red velvet liner. A label on the inside of the box reads, "Adjust the epaulettes in the airtight case - Raise the wire frame put one to the right then replace the frame for the reception of the other - 1857." For epaulets (.6.55a-b).

Provenance Commander French Forrest, Confederate States Navy wore this pair of epaulets.

Forrest was in the United States Navy; following Virginia's secession, he served as flag officer of the Virginia State Navy, and commanded the Norfolk Navy Yard; when Virginia joined the Confederacy, he served in the Confederate Navy in the James River Squadron, and helped provide iron from the Gosport Navy Yard to the Tredegar Iron Works at the time of the casting of cannon for the Confederate government and armor for the CSS Virginia.
