Owned James Ewell Brown Stuart [J. E. B. Stuart]; A. R. Venable
Event Battle of Yellow Tavern
Provenance After he was wounded at Yellow Tavern, this pencil fell from Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart's coat when he was being carried into the Richmond residence where he later died. The donor was the son of A. R. Venable, who was on Stuart's staff at the time. Presumably the pencil was picked up by A. R. Venable at the time it fell from Stuart's coat.
