|Description||Wood pencil painted black. A small nick is taken out of the painted area, and "J.E.B.S." is written ink on an exposed surface. Remnants of an eraser are on the end.|
|Owned||James Ewell Brown Stuart [J. E. B. Stuart]; A. R. Venable|
|Event||Battle of Yellow Tavern|
|Provenance||After he was wounded at Yellow Tavern, this pencil fell from Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart's coat when he was being carried into the Richmond residence where he later died. The donor was the son of A. R. Venable, who was on Stuart's staff at the time. Presumably the pencil was picked up by A. R. Venable at the time it fell from Stuart's coat.|
