"Solid shot - During the war, Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island was held by the Federal Army. From the Navy Yard opposite Fort Pickens and from Forts Barrancas and McRae both situated west of the Navy Yard, there was firing at Fort Pickens and the blockading fleet. In 1897 while dredging the bar at the mouth of the harbor at Pensacola, these solid shot were taken up in a suction dredge, having been fired from Confederate guns fallen short of the mark and after thirty years, brought up from the depth of the sea."
