The badge consists of two parts - bar pin and pendant. The gold and enamel bar pin is shaped like a crested rectangle. A single black enamel line follows the exterior edge perimeter of the pin. "RICHMOND / HOWITZERS" is printed on the bar in black enamel. Two four-link chains connect the bar pin to a gold and enamel octagonal pendant. The octagonal edges of the pendant are plain. The center's background is yellow enamel. A relief image of two crossed cannons is in the center. A narrow red enamel ring encircles the yellow background. Stenciled lettering inside the ring reads, "CITA MORS AUT VICTORIA LAETA / 1859." This ring is raised slightly above the octagonal edges. The back of the badge rests against the backing of the frame and is therefore, not visible. This badge is part of a large framed collection (0985.7.135); the rest of the collection is enumerated separately (0985.7.135a- 0985.7.135y, 0985.7.135aa-0985.7.135hh).
