Provenance Revolver given to Varina Davis for her personal protection during the evacuation from Richmond by General William M. Browne: "Pistol given to Mrs. Jefferson Davis when the Davis family began their retreat from Richmond, 1865. Mr. Davis showed Mrs. Davis how to use it. He told her, 'If you fear insult from our foes make them kill you.'"

"Before she left (Richmond), he ordered a small COlt pistol and fifty rounds of ammunition fromt he ordnance depot and showed her how to use them." ("Richmond Burning" by Nelson Lankford, page 78)
