Description Uniform frock coat: single breasted, 10 button front, brown (faded from gray) wool and cotton cloth with dark green wool and silk lining in body, brown cotton drill lining in sleeves, gold braid rectangular trim on the collar, gold braid epaulette brides, no facings or piping, Virginia state buttons with no backmarks.

Provenance This is the regimental uniform from 1860-61 of the 1st Virginia Volunteers, of which Francis West's unit, the Richmond City Guard, was part. A carpenter by trade, he enlisted at age twenty in Co. B, 1st Virginia Infantry, on April 21, 1861. He was listed as absent due to sickness in Richmond during August 1861. West died of a brain fever on June 30, 1862.
