Description The secession badge consists of a woven palmetto ornament attached to a blue silk ribbon. The palmetto ornament is in the shape of a tree. The bar pin at the top of the ribbon has a frayed edge. A paper label with "283" is attached to the ribbon.

Provenance This secession badge was worn in May 1861 by a soldier in a South Carolina unit, one of the first Confederate troops to come to Virginia after Secession had been declared.
