Object Name Bit, Bridle
Catalog Number 0985.05.00100
Description U.S. Model 1859 curb bit with "S" branches, #1 port, brass "US" bosses, two rein rings, bar connecting lower branches
Material Iron/Brass
Dimensions W-6 L-8 inches
Owned James Jamieson
Owner Regiment 2nd Louisiana Infantry, Co. B, "Pelican Grays"
Event Battle of Malvern Hill
Provenance Bit belonged to Pvt. James Jamieson, who was a member of the "Pelican Greys," which became Co. B, 2nd Louisiana Cavalry. He volunteered at the age of 15, was the only son of a widowed mother of Ouachita Parish, and was killed at Malvern Hill (presumably aged 16 or so).

[Note: research indicates that the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry was not present at the Battle of Malvern Hill (although the 2nd Louisiana Infantry was). No record of a Jamieson serving in the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry has been found. No James Jamieson (or Jameson, or Jamison, etc.) or widow of that surname is on the 1860 Census in Ouachita Parish. Thus the entire history associated with this artifact is suspect.]
