Event Battle of Blackburn's Ford
Provenance The presentation sword with scabbard in case belonged to Brig. Gen. Patrick Theodore Moore. He may have carried it when he served as captain of the "Montgomery Guard," a state militia unit from 1850 through 1860, which during the Civil War would become Company C of the 1st Virginia Infantry. After the war started, Moore was commissioned as Colonel of the 1st Virginia Infantry on April 24, 1861 in Longstreet's Brigade, until receiving a severe head wound during the Battle of Blackburn's Ford and was no longer able to lead an outfit.
