Event Battle of Fort Sumter
Provenance Bunting torn from a South Carolina state flag by a ball from Fort Sumter during the battle of April 12 and 13, 1861.

"Blue bunting torn from the Palmetto Flag of South Carolina by the shot from Fort Sumter during the battle of the 12th and 13th April, 1861. Through the kindness of Col. [Roswell S.] Ripley this relic of the banner was presented to Mrs. W. K. Bachman of Columbia, South Carolina, as being one of the ladies who contributed towards unfurling it on the ramparts of Fort Moultrie."

According to subsequent research, Mrs. Bachman originally presented and unfurled this flag at the fort in February 1861. In May 1861, Gen. Ripley gave the damaged flag to Gov. Pickens of South Carolina.
