Event Battle of Second Manassas / Second Bull Run
Provenance Lt. William Howard wore this sword and scabbard when he was killed in action at the Battle of Second Manassas. Per the donor history, Howard was born in Virginia and resided in Texas when the war began. He joined a Texas brigade. Howard was one of five brothers who gave their lives for the cause. After his death, Lt. John H. Chamberlayne wore the sword and scabbard; he commanded the Crenshaw Battery from August 1862 to April 23, 1863. Ten days before the Battle of Chancellorsville, he sent the sword and scabbard to Phil Howard.
