Provenance The portrait is of Lt. Dick Dowling, who was commanded the "Davis Guards" at Sabine Pass on September 8, 1863. He and his men defended the pass from partly finished earthworks against Union Gen. Banks gunboats. Painted by George F. Billings in 1928.
