Description Pipe carved from stone, with a palmetto tree design on one side and a five point star on the other. A drum, shield, bugle with two flags crossed in back are carved into the front of the pipe. "JULY 18th 1862" is lightly scratched on the side with the star. "A.L.P. / H.F.A. / 1862" is lightly scratched onto the base of the pipe. A faded red ribbon was attached to the pipe.

Made H. F. Allen, Gratiot Street Prison, St. Louis, Missouri
Provenance Pvt. H. F. Allen of Co. A, 21st (Kennedy's) Louisiana Infantry, made the pipe from a stone taken from one of the walls inside Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis. He gave the pipe to Auguste L. Priest, who was a child at the time. Allen enlisted in Co. A on June 9, 1861 in New Orleans.
