Description Model 1860 US Naval Cutlass: 25.5 inch single-edged steel blade, one wide fuller, leather cushion; solid brass basket hilt, brass pommel cap, wooden grip with leather wrap, brass wire missing; stamped on guard "U.S.N / D.R. / 1862" and "18m / 293."; reverse stamped "Made by / Ames MFG. CO. / Chicopee / Mass". No scabbard.

Provenance This cutlass was one of three taken from the wreck of the USS Keokuk, sunk in Charleston Harbor on April 8, 1863. This cutlass was then presented to Maj. Joseph Abney, who was stationed on Morris Island as a member of the 1st Bn. South Carolina Sharpshooters.
