Description The wood fragment consists of a small rectangular-shaped piece of wood attached to a paper card. The card contains a history of the wood fragment, paper label "231," and ink signatures: "Fort Johnson, S. C. / Decr, 27th, 1897. / Dear Genl. / I take pleasure in sending you a piece of the lumber that formed the platform of the 13 in. Mortars that fired the first shot at Fort Sumter at 4 a.m. 12th April, 1861. / I was near the battery when the gun was fired, and saw the shell as it burst over the Fort. / Hoping that you may be able to utilize the piece I send you for the purpose you wish, I am / Yours truly / R. Lebby, M.D. / General Irvine C. Walker / Presented to Gen. J. R. Waites / This is a piece of the wood described above, C. J. Walker."
