Description The thread wheel consists of a rounded mother-of-pearl wheel shape having etched leaves and blossoms. The center disc on one side has a picture of an Oriental woman in her garden etched into its surface. One spoke of the wheel has been broken off.
Dimensions Dia-2 inches
Owned Jane Hunter
Provenance The thread wheel was used to wind thread. It was purchased in Nashville and used by Miss Jane Hunter (the donor's aunt) before and through the entire war. Before spools were invented, sewing thread came to merchants in large hanks and seperated in skeins of so many yars each and so sold by them to customers. These skeins were around on such reels by the seamstress and used as a spool is used to keep the thread from becoming tangled.
