Provenance Gutta percha cross carved by Edward Dudley Ragland, 7th Tennessee Cavalry while in prison at Fort Douglas, Chicago, Illinois circa 1864-1865. It was made from a comb given to him by his mother. The cross was first inlaid with mother of pearl from a mussel shell but later replaced by silver from his mother's thimble. He gave the cross to his wife upon his return to Memphis in 1865. (Related newspaper clipping in file)
